Gay Toys Inc. SR-71 - Blue SP

Serving from 1964 to 1998, the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird was a long range Mach 3+ reconnaissance aircraft operated by the U.S. Air Force. Lockheed's legendary designer Clarence "Kelly" Johnson was responsible for many of the planes unique features. Although hotly pursued by adversary missiles during the Cold War, none were shot down, although 12 were lost in accidents. Having seen a fly-by of one these back in 1997 during the Air Force's 50th Anniversary Air Show at Nellis AFB, I can tell ya how impressive they are in person.

This is the first time we've posted an SR-71 here on the blog and the first toy by a company called 'Gay Toys, Inc.' of which I know very little. My library of collector's books isn't all that big and wasn't much help and the Internet gave mixed results. Typing in a search for 'Gay Toys' gets umm, unusual results to say the least! I do know that it was founded in 1962 and located in Walled Lake, Michigan and that the company is now called 'American Plastic Toys, Inc.'. Toys from this company appear quite regularly on fleaBay This toy is fairly big at 11 3/4" (29.84cm) L x 6" (15.24cm) wingspan x 2 1/4" (5.71cm) H and I believe would have had peel-&-stick appliques' originally
